About
Woodward Lofts

Affordable homes for older adults, built to last.

Woodward Lofts will give older adults in Harrisburg a safe, affordable place to live in a neighborhood that has waited a long time for new investment. The four-story building stands on the lot where Woodward Elementary School once stood. It is Pennsylvania's first mass timber affordable housing development financed with state housing tax credits.

How it’s built

A mass timber building for Pennsylvania’s affordable housing.

Woodward Lofts is built with cross-laminated timber floors and prefabricated wall panels, a hybrid system rarely used in affordable housing. It is the first mass timber project approved by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.

One of the most distinctive features of Woodward Lofts is its innovative use of mass timber construction. This sustainable building approach utilizes engineered wood products as primary structural components, offering environmental advantages, including reduced embodied carbon compared with many conventional construction methods. Mass timber also creates opportunities to explore the relationship between natural building materials, indoor environments, and resident well-being. Woodward Lofts represents a pioneering application of this construction approach within affordable senior housing in our region.
